Njawara,
extension Health Center
Njawara is a village in the lower Baddibu North Bank region, about 10km north of Kerawan. It is an agricultural community of 1,389 inhabitants from various tribes: Mandinka, Fulla and Wollof.
In the village there is a small medical center of 8 beds and 4 staff members to take care of the elementary medical needs. Patients needing more complicated surgeries are referred to Kerawan Health Center.
Patients are from the neighboring villages of Torrobah, Torroptayam, Ndjie Kund, Kerr Ardo, Kerr Banno, Chogenmegera, Tawakattu, Chogenfulla, Kerrmbamureh, Pallem Amdalie, Pannehba, Sambamugu, Tallenwollof, Tallenfulla Foday, Biran, and Gebelsatou, - 3,000 inhabitants altogether. People from
neighboring Senegalese villages make a frequent use of this medical
center, too.
Njawara Health Center was built by the Njawara community in 2004, with the support of an English
organization, Edinburg Global Partnership.
There is a plan to improve the working environment of health employees: a three-room building is to be constructed for the accommodation of the four employees. In recent years the staff has lived in a village at some distance away from the health Center, which is very inconvenient for both patients and staff.
The new building will improve health care, for it will enable quicker medical service. At the moment there is always a delay in offering medical help, especially at night.
Last year the center built a maternity ward. Together with the Jammeh Foundation the Antwerpen-Banjul Challenge then provided solar panels to improve both electricity supply and the center’s services. At the same time an ambulance was donated by Team Arie.
However, since staff quarters are at some distance from the center, there are still serious problems for women who need urgent help or immediate transport to hospital.
Estimated costs of this project 154,570 Dalasis / 4416 Euros
