Kartung, Gilanka school en bore hole

Het Gilanka schooltje is sinds 2016 in Kartong in opbouw, een gebouw inmiddels met 5 lokaaltjes met rond de 110 kinderen vanaf jonge leeftijd. Kartong is helemaal in het zuiden het laatste dorp tegen de grens met Senegal. Een arm gedeelte van Gambia waar scholing van kinderen jaren niet op de 1^e of zelfs 2^e plaats kwam. Met de veranderingen vanuit de regering, dat kinderen naar school moeten vanaf 1 januari 2018, en daarbij niet de vraag: maar hoe dan? Ouders hebben geen financiën, leven van minimale middelen die ze door werk genereren en vaker leven onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden. De plaatselijke St. Martin christelijke school zit overvol, met hele grote groepen kinderen in een klas. De vraag is dan ook wat kinderen leren.

Een aantal kinderen komen zonder ontbijt naar school. In de ochtendpauze wordt er een versnapering gegeven en drinken. Gesponsorde kinderen ontvangen ’s middags een lunch. Kinderen die niet gesponsord worden brengen de lunch mee van thuis of kunnen wanneer ze een paar dalasi meebrengen een lunch ontvangen op school. Die wordt verzorgt door de familie van Lamin.
Dit in tegenstelling tot de basisschool, waar de overheid elke dag voor de leerlingen een maaltijd betaalt en vaker voor hele grote groepen kinderen word gekookt.

Vanaf 2014 is er ook wel wat veranderd met minimale sponsering financiële middelen, het inzamelen van bruikbare goederen, die verkocht kunnen worden in Gambia waarvan de opbrengst voor het schooltje is.
- De lokalen hebben een betegelde vloer en zijn voorzien van tafels en stoeltjes, zie verder foto’s voor een indruk,
- Er is in het zuiden wat moeilijker aan leerkrachten te komen en wanneer ze van verder weg willen komen lesgeven, hebben ze een klein salaris,
- Sanitaire voorzieningen zijn minimaal, het idee is om de kinderen ook hygiëne bij te brengen en leren tandenpoetsen,
- Momenteel zijn er rond de 110 jonge kinderen die enorm genieten van hun dagelijkse ritme naar school te kunnen gaan,

-Elk jaar komen er kinderen bij die naar school moeten en waarvan de ouders de noodzaak inzien dat ze naar school gaan. Er worden via Youth Support ook duidelijke afspraken over gemaakt met de ouders, met een op contract.

De foto hierboven is van het moment in maart dat de lockdown inging en er toch nog een aantal kinderen naar school kwamen, omdat wij er met onze groep er een bezoek brachten. Dan word er gezongen en gedanst en brengen wij wat schoolmateriaal (gekocht in Gambia), geld en versnapering mee voor de kinderen. Voor de meesten was het in het begin een avontuur, omdat ze doorgaans geen blanke mensen ontmoeten in hun thuisomgeving. De lockdown heeft tot oktober geduurd wat duidelijk gevolgen heeft gehad voor de kinderen, maar ook de leerkrachten. Een nog jonge leerkracht is na ziekte in die periode komen te overlijden.

Onderwijs verzorgen met zeer minimale middelen, omdat je wil dat kinderen zich kunnen ontwikkelen. Lamin heeft zijn mouwen opgestroopt en is eraan begonnen. Met een schooltje wat niet in de beste staat verkeerd en in de regentijd lekkages ondervindt.

Project Description (200 words)Brief summary of project backgrond, problem statement and justification

1. Gilanka Comprehensive School was established by Gilanka Foundation for Sustainable Development to amongst others improve access to quality and affordable education as well as improve literacy levels in the community of Kartong. The School currently enrols 160 pupils with 8 teachers. However, the school does not have enough classrooms and the existing one needs immediate rehabilitation. The pupils are usually cramped in the few classrooms available and this is not only unhealthy but runs contrary to best practices. Furthermore, the roofing on the existing classroom block leaks heavily during the rainy season and needs to be urgently replaced as we approach another rainy season. Doors and windows also need be fitted in the classroom block. It is clear that Gilanka

Comprehensive School is proving to be a great alternative for parents in the quest to ensure that their children access quality and affordable. The school is building a name for itself in this area but the apparent lack of classrooms and the status of the facilities threaten to inhibit this achievement. Therefore, the need for support to improve the facilities cannot be overstated and is quite evident. If the school is to build on its gains and also deliver on its promise to provide quality and affordable education, the glaring requirement of rehabilitating the facilities should be met. Support should therefore be rendered for the accomplishment of the activity.

2. The school intends to create a vegetable garden where it will grow vegetables that can be sold to generate some income for sustainability purposes. However, the issue of water supply is a problem for the community of Kartong where water is not enough. Therefore, the borehole project is aimed at allowing the school/garden to have a sustainable source of water. The borehole will also allow the garden will also contribute to the school’s objective to provide one hot meal to all pupils in a given day whilst also giving women in the community an opportunity to use the garden to grow vegetables to support the payment of their kids’ school fees.

Project Sustainability

The sustainability plan is a robust one which aims to ensure that the long term durability of the project is assured. A maintence plan will be developed and this will be religiously followed. Funds will be set aside from the fees paid by the pupils and this will be invested in maintaing the building.

Also, the School will also engage in vegatable gardening where proceeds will be used to fund the maintanenance activities thereby enhancing sustainability.

The Board will also engage the community to encourage the community to take ownership of the projects by participating in voluntary maintenance programmes in the school.
