Project Description Brief summary of project backgrond, problem statement and justification

Second Home is a living facility for children with disabilities with a dangerous home situation. These children with disabilities are not adequately cared for at home, which is why Second Home shares care with parents from Monday to Friday. In this way, children from the furthest rural areas can also come to special education (Special Methodist School). Second Home has been around for 15 years and is committed to increasing knowledge transfer about various disabilities. In this way we hope to offer people with disabilities more opportunities in the future, such as education or work. The qualities and talents of children with disabilities in Gambia are not recognized in many home situations. Many people are ashamed if they have a child who deviates from the standard. Second Home already has several success stories where children have joined a learning/working place after their time at Second Home.

Major goal

Create a safe home for children with disabilities so they can go to school.

Specific objectives

-Children can live from Monday till Friday to Second Home and go to school. 

-Second Home is a safe place. 

-Second Home temporaliry takes care of children together with parents. 

-Second Home gives psychoeducation to parents about disabbilities and behaviour of their child. 

-When safety at the home situation of the child is increased the child returns home. 

-Second Home helps to find a suitable daycare (school or work) for the child when it returns home. 

Expected outputs-Children can grow up and develop in a safe environment. 

-Children can return to a safe home situation at their families. 

-Children get suitable education. 

-Children get a suitable daycare (school or work) when they leave Second Home. 

Project Sustainability

Second Home depends on sponsors and donations. We are actively committed to raising money every month to keep the residential facility running. In the near future we would like to do more about sustainability so that Second Home becomes less dependent on Dutch sponsors. Think of selling chicken eggs, starting a bicycle repair shop, creating a carpentry workshop, opening a B&B for guests.
